Debra Lohrere grew up in Victoria, Australia and was interested in capturing her
surrounding on paper from a young age. As a teenager she progressed into putting her art to
canvas in acrylics then moving to oils. She studied at the Alexander Art Gallery under Marlene
Leary and then Audrey Hinchcliffe painting landscapes and Spanish Galleons. She sold her first
painting at the age of 16 and also won a Certificate of Achievement at a Dandenong Youth Art
Show. Her love of architecture began to take shape and she started striving to capture the
beauty of many of the lovely historic Australian stonework buildings in her works.
For many years a busy lifestyle and bringing up a family meant that she only had time to paint
the occasional piece but now paints almost every day. She has become bolder in her subject
matters and colour schemes and loves to experiment with new themes. She especially loves to
capture movement in her paintings and in her landscapes often portrays horses and cows in
motion.
Her genre is somewhere in between realism and impressionism, as she likes her works to look
realistic but still like a painting. She says "With art I feel that if someone is after
something that looks like a photo that's what they should buy. I like my paintings to be
beautiful but look like paintings".
Debra does commissioned works of people's houses and portraits and runs her own online art
gallery website. Her artworks hang in private collections all around Australia.
