I am a portrait and fine art painter predominately working in oil on linen or
canvas. I divide my time between my North London base, and studio in Italy, in the
Veneto region.
My work is a mixture of commissioned (private and corporate clients) and self generated
projects. The portrayal of my subjects is both honest and distinct in their means of
expression and impression. I believe that for a portrait to be successful, the
interpretation reveals something of the qualities and nature of the sitter.
Unlike the commissioned work, my personal projects don't have a specific audience in mind.
So, there is no client, no commercial purpose, or deadline - the pressure is off, so to
say. Although I'm aware of the 'gaze' their opinion, taste or interest has little
influence on the creation. The creative process - i.e. the very action of creating - is
where meaning lies. Ultimately, the finished product is, in my view, successful if
it is spawned from a place of integrity and candour, and when it briefly closes the eyes
to the expectations of a real or fictitious audience.
