Size is a glue used as preparation of the ground before
priming. The glue is usually made from animal products but can be any fairly weak glue. It is used in
art mainly for filling the porous surface of wooden panels or canvases to provide a suitable
foundation for the priming. Size is also sometimes used as a painting medium and paint mixed with it
is called distemper.
