Open in March 2006, Galeria Oeste takes a distinctive look at Brazilian contemporary art,
acknowledging that our finest works of art attain high standards and diverse modes of expression,
while remaining freely experimental.
Such a broad perspective is due, in part, to the fact that our artists do not belong only to the
Rio and São Paulo milieu. Because art is universal, it arises from unique and often dissonant
voices.
Galeria Oeste has chosen to work closely with a select group of artists, combining young talents
with those whose careers are already established, covering a wide range of media, from painting to
installations, from drawings to performances, from sculpture to photography and video.
In 2006, the gallery organized several collective and solo exhibitions with some of Brazil's most
renowned artists, such as José Spaniol and Eduardo Coimbra. In the course of 2006, the
gallery also organized collective art shows with some prominent young artists of Brazilian
contemporary scenes, presenting mainly photography and installations.
In 2007, the gallery presented Luiz Braga´s solo photo exhibition as well as a collective
exhibition with works from several contemporary artists from the Northeast of Brazil curated by
Ricardo Resende.
In October 2008, Oeste opened a large-scale conceptual installation by Elida Tessler covering the
whole exhibition room.
