Historical Artist - Louis Anquetin (1861 - 1932)
French painter, Louis Anquetin began his career joining groups that included the pioneers of
avant-garde painting such as Vincent Van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Along with
colleague Bernard, Anquetin fathered Cloisonnism. After 1890, his work became more traditional
and incorporated the techniques of the Old Masters, particularly Rubens. Anquetin was also a
draughtsman and produced tapestry cartoons for the Beauvais and Gobelins factories. Later in
life, Anquetin wrote a book on Rubens, which was published in 1924. He died in Paris.
