Historical Artist - Jacques Aved (1702 - 1766)
Jacques-Andre-Joseph Aved moved to Amsterdam with his widowed mother and Dutch sea captain
stepfather. At the age of 16, Aved was traveling throughout the Netherlands, producing portraits
at fairs. He worked briefly in studios of French artists living in Amsterdam before actually
going to Paris. During this time, Aved made the acquaintance of Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin and
together they devoted their work to depicting the “truth” of their subjects rather
than just the outward appearance. Aved flourished in Paris, joining the Academie de Peinture and
becoming an extensive collector of pieces by many important artists of the time.
His father was a physician and he was orphaned when he was a little boy. He was raised in
Amsterdam by one of his uncles, who was a captain in Dutch Army.
After his training in Amsterdam with Boitard and Picart, Joseph Aved started working in Paris
for Belle in 1721. He later entered at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture
(Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture) in 1731 and he was appointed councillor
after graduating in 1734 and in1759, he took part in his last salon.
