Historical Artist - Gaspar Becerra (1520 - 1568)
Gaspar Becerra began his career in Italy working as an assistant to Vasari in Rome. He returned
to Spain in 1557 and began working on an altarpiece for the Astorga Cathedral a year later.
Becerra became court painter for Philip II in 1562. His familiarity with Italian art helped him
secure the position and a highly respected reputation among the Spanish nobility. He also
painted altar-pieces for several of the churches, most of which have been destroyed. His fame as
a sculptor almost surpassed that as a painter. His best work was a magnificent figure of the
Virgin Mary, which was destroyed during the French war.
