Historical Artist - Jan Both (1610 - 1652)
Jan Both was born in Utrecht and studied there before traveling to Italy in about 1637. Over
the four years spent there, he is thought to have produced over 300 paintings. Both’s
paintings of Dutch life were especially popular with collectors in England. His landscapes are
typically peopled by peasants driving cattle or travellers gazing on Roman ruins in the light of
the evening sun The everyday life of the streets of Rome became a favourite theme in his works.
