Historical Artist - Luca Carlevaris (1665 - 1731)
Luca Carlevaris was born in Udine but worked mostly in Venice. He is recognized as the father
of 18th century Venetian view painting, incorporating mathematics and perspective into his
investigations. Carlevaris published a set of 104 etchings of Venice in 1703, which was later
used by Canaletto and Guardi. He painted landscapes, sea-pieces, and perspective views. He
completed over a hundred etchings of views in Venice, which give an exact representation of the
principal places in that city. He died at Venice.
