Historical Artist - Thomas Crawford (1813 - 1857)
Born in America, Thomas Crawford moved to Rome in 1835 to study with Thorvaldsen. Despite his
relocation to Italy, he made frequent visits to the United States and gained a good reputation
as a neoclassical sculptor in his native country. In 1855, Crawford began one his most
recognized works, Armed Liberty, a bronze statue that rests atop the dome of the Capital in
Washington D.C. His major accomplishments include the figure above the dome of the United States
Capitol entitled Freedom, and the bronze doors and pediment statues for the Senate wing.
