Historical Artist - Willem de Kooning (1904 - 1997)
Willem de Kooning began his artistic career early apprenticing to commercial art firm in the
Nethlerlands at the age of 12. He received his training from the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts
and moved to New York in 1925. He shared studio space with Arshille Gorky in the early
1930’s, gaining exposure to the Surrealist movement. After World War II, de Kooning
gravitated toward Abstract Expressionism under the guidance of Adolph Gottlieb. After
successfully leading the development of the movement with his dynamic painting, de Kooning
turned toward clay sculpting late in his career. In the post-World War II era, de Kooning
painted in a style that came to be referred to variously as Abstract expressionism, Action
painting, and the New York School.
