Historical Artist - Evelyn De Morgan (1855 - 1919)
Born Evelyn Pickering, she married famous potter, ceramicist, and fellow painter, William De
Morgan in 1887. She was inspired by the work of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and Renaissance
artists such as Botticelli. She initially painted mostly literary subjects, but produced several
allegorical paintings during World War I. Evelyn was homeschooled and started drawing lessons
when she was 15. On the morning of her seventeenth birthday, Evelyn recorded in her diary,
"Art is eternal, but life is short..." "I will make up for it now, I have not a
moment to lose." She went on to persuade her parents to let her go to art school.
