Historical Artist - Charles Demuth (1883 - 1935)
After visiting Europe several times during the early 20th century, American painter and
illustrator, Charles Demuth returned to the United States with a strong interest in avant-garde
art. Beginning in 1916, his style reflected the influence of Cubism, as seen in his
architectural paintings. He became a leading artist of the Precisionist movement and produced
pieces that he called “portrait posters.” His famous painting I Saw the Figure Five
in Gold is an example of one of these works and was created as a tribute to poet, William Carlos
Williams. Due to illness in his early life, Demuth was incapacitated with diabetes for most of
his final decade. He later studied at Académie Colarossi and Académie Julian in
Paris, where he became a part of the avant garde art scene.
