Historical Artist - Thomas Doughty (1793 - 1856)
Thomas Doughty was born in Philadelphia, where he lived most of his life except for periods
where he resided in Boston and New York. He was a self-taught painter, traveling to Europe in
1837 and 1845. Doughty was the first American painter to paint landscapes exclusively and is
considered to be the forerunner of the Hudson River School. He was also a pioneer of lithography
in the United States. Thomas Doughty was the first American artist to work exclusively as a
landscapist and was successful both for his skill and the fact that Americans were turning their
interest to landscape. He was known for his quiet, often atmospheric landscapes of the rivers
and mountains of Pennsylvania, New York, New England, and especially the Hudson River Valley. He
taught himself how to paint while aprenticing for a leather manufacturer.
