Historical Artist - Arthur Dove (1880 - 1946)
Arthur Dove began his career as a commercial artist, a job which often caused him financial
suffering. From 1907 to 1909, he traveled in Europe where he was influenced by Fauvism among
other new movements. His first abstract work appeared in 1910, Abstraction No 1 –
Abstraction No 6, marking the creation of the first American abstract paintings. Two years
later, he held his first solo exhibition at Stieglitz’s 291 Gallery. His early paintings
incorporated organic shapes but he later took interest in geometrical patterns.
