Historical Artist - Russell Drysdale (1912 - 1981)
Sir George Drysdale was born in Sussex and moved to Melbourne in Victoria, Australia with his
family at the age of eleven. He initially studied at the George Bell Art School and then
traveled to London to train at the Royal Academy School. After encountering Surrealism in Paris,
Drysdale returned to Australia and concentrated on realist scenes of the Outback. His first
exhibition was in London in 1950, which established him as one of the most influential artists
in Australian art. Drysdale was knighted in 1969 and became a Companion of the Order of
Australia in 1980.
