Historical Artist - Gaspard Dughet (1615 - 1675)
Gaspard Dughet was born in Rome where he spent most of his life and career, never having left
Italy in his lifetime. Despite this, he was considered to be a member of the French School
because from 1613 to 1635, his brother-in-law, Nicolas Poussin, taught him. His work closely
resembles that of his teacher, but differs in its more romantic style. He devoted himself to
landscape painting and rendered admirably the severer beauties of the Roman Campagna; a
noteworthy series of works in tempera representing various sites near Rome.
