Historical Artist - Augustus Egg (1816 - 1863)
Augustus Egg was an English painter specializing in historical and literary themes. He was also
a friend of Charles Dickens and an actor. After encountering the work of the Pre-Raphaelites,
his work took on moral subject matters, an example of which was his series titled Past and
Present that depicted the act of adultery. Egg's early paintings were generally illustrations of
literary subjects. Like other members of The Clique, he saw himself as a follower of Hogarth.
