Historical Artist - Copley Fielding (1787 - 1855)
Copley Fielding was the most famous member of a family of artists. He studied under Varley and
married his mentor’s sister-in-law in 1813. He painted in watercolors, using the scenery
of Wales and the Lake District for inspiration early in his career. After he moved to the south
coast in 1817, Fielding turned to seascapes. Copley Fielding was a painter of much elegance,
taste and accomplishment and, while not reaching very high in originality of purpose or of
style, has always been highly popular with purchasers. He painted a vast number of all sorts of
views (occasionally in oil-color) including marine subjects in large proportion. Specimens of
his work from 1829 to 1850 can be seen in the water-color gallery of the Victoria and Albert
Museum. Among the engraved specimens of his art is the Annual of British Landscape Scenery,
published in 1839.
