Historical Artist - Luca Giordano (1632 - 1705)
Luca Giordano was thought to have trained with Jusepe de Ribera and was influenced by his
dramatic and dark approach to painting. In the late 1650’s, he developed a style similar
to that of Pietro da Cortona and Peter Paul Rubens. From 1692 to 1702, Giordano was
Spain’s court painter. Giordano has been criticized as being a prolific trader of all
styles, and master of none. He has been viewed as a proto-Tiepolo, reanimating that grand manner
of Cortona in a style that would brighten with Tiepolo.
