Historical Artist - George Hayter (1792 - 1871)
Sir George Hayter was the son of miniaturist, Charles Hayter but instead specialized in
historical and portrait painting. He studied at the Royal Academy and in Rome. In 1837, he was
appointed the portrait and history painter to Queen Victoria. After the death of Wilkie in 1841,
he was given the title of ‘principal painter and ordinary to the queen.’ Hayter is
remembered for his royal and group portraits. Despite his royal standing, he never was admitted
to the Royal Academy and it is speculated that this is because he lived with a woman who was not
his wife.
