Historical Artist - Ozias Humphrey (1742 - 1810)
Ozias Humphry began working as a portraitist in Bath before moving to London in 1764. After
being involved in a horseback riding accident in 1772, he sustained some damage to his eyes and
could no longer paint miniatures. He traveled to Italy from 1773 to 1777 and learned to paint in
oils. Then from 1785 to 1788 Humphry he was in India, where he attempted to paint miniatures
once again but failed again due to his eyesight. He took up pastels, becoming Portrait Painter
in Crayons to His Majesty in 1792. Five years later, Humphry went blind and was forced to give
up painting.
