Historical Artist - Johan Jongkind (1819 - 1891)
Although he was born in Holland, Johan Barthold Jongkind spent the majority of his career as a
painter and etcher in France. He first studied in The Hague under Schelfhout before moving there
in 1846. He exhibited with the Barbizon School and also had a part in the development of
Impressionism. Although Jongkind dealt with a range of subjects, he is mostly remembered for his
coastal and river scenes.
