Historical Artist - Alton S. Tobey (1914 - 2005)
Alton S. Tobey was one of the most prolific and diversified artists of the past century. For
over six decades Tobey's murals, published works and thousands of paintings have taken millions
of people on amazing visual journeys through world history, science, archaeology and dozens of
other subjects.
His murals and historical paintings are in the collections of The Smithsonian American Art
Museum, The National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of American Illustration and over a
dozen other museums and national memorials. He did hundreds of paintings for Life magazine, The
Epic of Man, The Golden Books History of the United States, and for dozens of other books and
periodicals. His portrait Brothers United of John F. and Robert Kennedy, and his The Apollo 11
Astronauts have been reproduced in the tens of thousands and circulated worldwide as
reproductions prints; and many of his other original works have been immortalized in other
forms, such as collectibles.
