Historical Artist - Dirck Van Baburen (1595 - 1624)
Dirck van Buren studied in Utrecht under Moreelse before moving to Rome in 1612. Baburen
returned to the Netherlands nine years later, strongly influenced by the work of Caravaggio.
Along with Honthorst and Terbrugghen, he helped spread the Carravaggesque style in Utrecht.
along with Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerard van Honthorst, helped establish the stylistic and
thematic innovations now known as the Utrecht School of Caravaggisti. He was buried on February 28, 1624, in the Buurkerk, a medieval church which now houses
the Museum Van Speelklok tot Pierement. Around 1629, Constantijn Huygens noted Baburen as one of
the important Dutch painters active in the early decades of the seventeenth century.
