Recession
In art, recession is the appearance or illusion of depth in a picture. The traditional methods of
achieving the sense of recession are by deploying the more distant shapes higher up the format; by
placing shapes in front of each other; by perspective devices; by foreshortening; by contrast of tones
and colours weakened or strengthened, to indicate distance or proximity respectively.
